Lynchburg, Tennessee Destination Guide
Tennessee is the home of world-famous whiskey. One of the most popular is Jack Daniel’s whiskey, which was founded on Jack’s property in Lynchburg, Tennessee.
Every October, Lynchburg hosts the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational BBQ competition. It brings over 40,000 people into the small town.
Tour of Jack Daniel’s Distillery
Jack Daniel’s is the oldest registered distillery in the United States. All of the whiskey is produced in Lynchburg. We took the 90 minute Flight of Jack tour at Jack Daniel’s Distillery. On our tour we learned that the iron-free spring water that comes from the Cave Springs Hollow in Lynchburg, Tennessee is the most important ingredient in Jack Daniel’s whiskey. The tour guide explained not only the history of the distillery, but also the life of Jack Daniel’s. It was interesting to learn how the distillery came about and the impact it has had on the community of Lynchburg.
Miss Mary Bobo’s
In 1908, Jack and Mary Bobo took over a well-known boarding house that had a reputation for having some of the very best home-cooked southern food. After the owner passed away in 1913, Jack and Mary purchased the home. They continued running the boarding house, which exclusively accommodated invited guests of the Jack Daniels Distillery. In 1948, Jack Bobo passed away but Miss Mary and staff continued running the boarding house. Miss Mary Bobo passed away in 1983. The distillery then purchased the boarding house because of it’s importance in the town of Lynchburg. Although guests can no longer board at Mary Bobo’s, they can enjoy a mid-day meal. Currently, there are two meal times each day and those times get booked quickly. We bought tickets for the 1:00 meal about two months prior to our visit.
The southern hospitality, history, and charm are all what makes dining at Miss Mary Bobo’s a special experience. Guests are assigned a dining room, and when the dinner bell rings the hostess will announce each room location and host. Our dining room was a table of 10 guests plus the host. Each meal is served family-style. We enjoyed fried chicken, meatloaf, cornbread, potatoes, tomato casserole, fried okra, baked apples, pinto beans, and sweet tea. For dessert, we were served a slice of tasty oatmeal pie. Miss Mary Bobo’s also has a gift shop inside where guests can purchase local goods and souvenirs. I purchased some of Miss Mary Bobo’s ground coffee (which I thoroughly enjoyed after arriving back home)!
Lynchburg’s Town Square
The historic Lynchburg square has unique shops, the old jail museum, along with a handful of restaurants. In the center is the town courthouse, which was built in 1885. We walked around the town square, enjoyed breakfast at Southern Perks Cafe along with wine tasting at the Lynchburg Winery. The Jack Daniel’s General Store is also a part of the town square.
About 20 minutes away from Lynchburg is the city of Tullahoma. We enjoyed coffee and scones at Fuel So Good coffee shop. We also dined at Daddy Billy’s Restaurant and Bar one evening. They had local beers on tap from their local brewery, Ole Shed. Tullahoma is also home to the George Dickel Distillery, which is featured on the American Whiskey Trail.
