The Caribbean island of St. Maarten has many resorts for people of all ages. We visited the island for a week in June of 2021. Our stay was at the beautiful Sonesta Ocean Point resort. This resort is adults only, however; you can use all of the amenities at the sister property right next door. That property is Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino & Spa. It includes a coffee shop and several dining options along with a separate pool and beach area. The beach area is the famous Maho Beach, which is adjacent to the Princess Juliana International Airport. It is a tourist spot where visitors come to watch aircraft as they approach the airport to land. We found plane watching to be one of the neatest experiences in St. Maarten!
While at Sonesta Ocean Point resort, we had plenty of time to relax. Even though it is a smaller resort, there are two pools you can enjoy. Most days we went to the main pool area overlooking the beautiful turquoise blue ocean water. We also spent time in the infinity edge pool that is near Azul, the main restaurant. We never had a problem finding a beach chair, and we had the best service from the staff! Everyone is so friendly in St. Maarten.
Travel Tip: I have this carry-on bag that also doubles as my beach bag!
Azul was the primary restaurant at Ocean Point, and it had a menu that varied daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We spent quite a few of our meals there, but we also had lunch from Casa Blue. Additionally, we dined at two restaurants on the Maho Beach Resort. We enjoyed Ocean Terrace for Italian as well as the Palms Grill. On a few occasions, we ordered breakfast and lunch from room service. This way, we could eat outside on our patio while taking in the incredible views!
The staff at Ocean Point were so gracious to assist in finding a pretty beach to visit nearby. They gave us directions so we could walk to Mullet Bay Beach. Mullet Bay Beach was just pristine! The water is very clear, and the sand is so soft. There are local huts and vendors where you can purchase souvenirs, food, and beverages. You can also pay $15 for two beach chairs under an umbrella and a local will set them up for you. We enjoyed lounging in the beach chairs while taking in the incredible ocean views!
While most days were spent relaxing and soaking up the sun, we decided to visit the popular Sunset Beach Bar one afternoon. It is just a short walk across Maho Beach, where you can watch the planes take off and land. The bar posts a daily schedule of flights on a large sign so visitors can be prepared for the jets as they depart and arrive. We had a blast visiting with other families and watching the planes from here!
We loved exploring the amazing island of St. Maarten!
