1. Wine Tour

There are a number of wine tours in Hill Country. Since we were celebrating my birthday, we wanted something memorable. We chose Texas Grapes Wine Tours as recommended by our VRBO host. We had 3 wineries on our itinerary for the day.

  • French Connection
  • Kuhlman Cellars
  • Signor Vineyard

The views at French Connection were incredible! We sat on the back patio looking out over the Texas hills. The wine service was personal although there are many other couples and groups on the patio enjoying wine tasting as well.

The owner of the wine tour company recommended Kuhlman Cellars for a unique wine and food experience. This was the highlight of our wine tour! The food pairing offered small bites that were complimentary to the 5 wine samples. Their well-known herbed almonds were part of the small bite selection and they were a hit! We can’t wait to return to Kuhlman Cellars when we are back in Texas hill country.

After our tasting at Kuhlman, we enjoyed lunch on their upstairs patio deck overlooking the vineyards. Lunch was a part of our wine tour package, and was from a local bakery. Clear River Ice Cream and Bakery did not disappoint! Our lunch box came with a sandwich (or wrap), house chips and pickle, as well as one of their homemade cookies. The bakery has a store front on main street in Fredericksburg (and it’s a busy place!).

Last stop on our wine tour was Signor Vineyards. This place is just picturesque! Their vineyard has a Wine Barn, a Market, and a lush garden/picnic area along with a shaded patio to enjoy wine and food.

Wineries

When in Texas Hill Country….

Foyt Winery and Museum is a newer winery in the Fredericksburg area, named after the legendary indy car racer AJ Foyt. The winery features a collection of his racing memorabilia, and a nice selection of wines.

Messina Hof is a family-owned winery and one of the oldest wineries in Texas. They have a large selection of wines as well as traditional style ports. Their tasting room has a variety of seating but make reservations in advance if you are visiting on a weekend or with a large group.

If you have been down Fredericksburg’s Main Street and haven’t had a picnic basket and sangria from Pontotoc Weingarten, then you are missing out! We stopped in late one afternoon and met the owner, who helped us get settled at a table. He recommended their shareable picnic basket which came with their homemade pimento cheese. We ordered that as well as a sangria, and a wine flight.

2. Burg’s Corner

At the ice cream counter here, you can order homemade peach ice cream or other homemade ice cream flavors they have available Also if you are looking to buy fresh peaches or produce, Burg’s Corner is your stop! They have many other local food items, including peach jam.

3. Luckenbach, TX

A short 20 minute drive from Fredericksburg is the small town of Luckenbach. Visitors can walk in the old Post Office and Saloon to buy souvenirs or drinks. Not to mention, you might catch a live band playing on one of their indoor or outdoor stages.

4. Main Street in Fredericksburg

The Fredericksburg main street has a variety of activities to offer. From wine tasting to shopping, dining, or exploring the town’s history, there are a number of attractions During our visit, we spent one morning shopping and exploring, then came back in the evening to listen to live music at Hondo’s. Another afternoon, we enjoyed a flight of beer at Fredericksburg Brewing.

5. Cabernet Grill

The Cabernet Grill is a part of the Cotton Gin Village, a B&B featuring rustic cabins and cottages. You are in for a treat at the Cabernet Grill. Ever heard of Texas Twinkies? They are bacon wrapped stuffed jalepenos. Yum! And, if you like a nice steak – this is your place!

6. Fredericksburg Pie Company

Fredericksburg Pie Company has a number of pies to choose from, but get there early so you don’t miss out! We grabbed a slice of peanut butter pie and coconut cream pie to-go. Both were delicious! However, I must say that I savored every bite of the coconut cream pie. So good!

7. Wildseed Farms

Wildseed Farms features a walking trail and beautiful garden area. Depending on the time of year, visitors can also take in their beautiful fields of wildflowers. You can also head inside to the gift shop, deli, or wine tasting room while here. We had the pleasure of wine tasting and visiting with one of the employees about the farm. The people here are so friendly!

8. Emma + Ollie

When you are visiting an area and you eat somewhere twice, then it must be good! Well, Emma + Ollie was that kind of place. Our first visit was for lunch, where we split an order of fried oyster nachos and an Ollie Burger. The following morning, we came back for breakfast. We sat on their shaded outdoor dog-friendly patio and shared an order of beignets and some breakfast tacos. Yummm!

9. Hill & Vine

On our last evening in Fredericksburg, we dined at Hill & Vine. They have a neat patio area that has plenty of seating, but we opted to dine inside. I had the Shrimp & Avacado-Lime Salad and Kevin had the Gulf Snapper Tacos. The portions were large and the food was tasty! We will definitely try their Sunday brunch the next time we are in Hill Country.

10. Alstadt Brewery

Offering German-style beers in a castle-like building is Alstadt Brewery. They also have a restaurant and tractor museum on site.
