How to Spend a Day in Freeport, Maine

Just 20 minutes from Portland, Maine is the unique city of Freeport. It’s home of the LL Bean flagship store and LL Bean headquarters. From shops to galleries and outdoor recreation activities, Freeport has something for everyone.

We spent time perusing the LL Bean store, which can’t be missed with it’s large Bean Boot outside! Along with the two-story clothing store, there is a LL Bean home store on the property as well. You could definitely spend a full day here!

And, there’s also the Freeport Village shopping area, which has locally owned boutiques and more. It’s just minutes from the sea!

Additionally, Freeport is home to Wilbur’s of Maine Chocolate factory. The company has been in business for over 40 years. We purchased chocolate covered cashews, maple malt balls, and lobster candy here!

There are a number of restaurants in the Freeport area. We chose to dine at Royal River Grill House located in Yarmouth, which is just 10 minutes from Freeport.

Although the marina is onsite, there is plenty of parking. Just outside the restaurant entrance is a wood sculpture which I thought was so neat. And the inside dining area is casual but classy. The crab cakes, haddock, and salmon were all delicious here!

Freeport also has a number of breweries in town. We stopped in a local veteran-owned brewery, Stars and Stripes Brewing Company. I enjoyed a flight of tasty beers, including a yummy blueberry ale. Sadly, this brewery is closing at the end of 2024.

Mast Landing Brewing Company and Maine Beer Company are a few among other craft breweries in Freeport.

If you’re looking for a place to stay in the Freeport area, there are a number of Inns, Bed & Breakfasts, and hotels. We found the Brewster House Bed & Breakfast to be the perfect spot for our one-night stay. In fact, we wished we could’ve stayed longer! Highly recommend checking it out if you’re looking to stay in or around Freeport.

After leaving Freeport, we drove 40 minutes to Manchester, Maine to visit the Maine Cabin Masters Headquarters. If you’ve ever watched HGTV, you might have seen the Maine Cabin Masters show. Kevin has been watching this show for years, so it was only fit for us to visit the Kennebec Cabin Company.

Outside the headquarters is The Woodshed. A wooden bar along with wooden picnic tables are set up and a stage is in the back. There were several visitors ordering lunch and enjoying the beautiful fall day out here!
