Just Passing Through

This page features places we have stopped briefly on our way somewhere. Therefore, we were just passing through…

Amarillo, Texas

We have been through Amarillo several times on our way to New Mexico. Recently, we enjoyed lunch on the dog-friendly patio at Tyler’s BBQ.

On our way back home, we picked up burgers to-go from Blue Sky Texas, which is conveniently right off I-40. Tip: Get the large order of half fries/half onion rings if you have someone to share with!

On a previous trip, we ordered food to-go from the Big Texan then stopped at Cadillac Ranch. If you enjoy fried okra, then you must order some from The Big Texan!

Duncan, Oklahoma

Oklahoma has many craft breweries throughout the state. Since we were near the area, we visited Kochendorfer Brewing in Duncan one afternoon. With a variety of beer and a large outdoor patio area, it was the perfect place to stop! Our fur-kids even enjoyed the cozy turfed area outside. And of course, we brought back some of their canned beer to enjoy at home.

Chickasha, Oklahoma

The town of Chickasha is located just 30 minutes south of Oklahoma City. It’s downtown has a permanent 50-foot statue of the leg lamp from the movie, The Christmas Story. And just a few blocks away is J & W Grill, a small diner known for their onion burgers.

Guymon, Oklahoma

You can’t go wrong with jalapeno chicken at Mr. Burger.

Joplin, Missouri

Club1201 is a locally owned restaurant serving excellent sandwiches. We stopped in for a to-go order since we had our pups in tow. The staff was very friendly and the food was great!

Lebanon, Missouri

Vintage Cowgirl at Wrinks Market on Route 66 is a small town diner with homemade pies. We stopped on our way through and ordered take-out so we could get back on the road. We enjoyed burgers, fries, and two slices of pie “to-go.” My husband had the peanut butter pie while I ordered the coconut cream pie.

Meers, Oklahoma

While in Southwestern Oklahoma, we couldn’t pass up a stop at Meers Store & Restaurant. When it was a gold mine town, the burger joint opened in 1901 to server miners. The famous Meersburger comes from grass-fed, Meers-raised longhorns. On the walls inside, you’ll find awards from cattle shows as well as other memorabilia. Meers is on the National Registry of Historic Places and has an address listed as Lawton, Oklahoma.

Memphis, Tennessee

We have been through Memphis a few times on road trips. In downtown Memphis, you’ll find the famous Peabody Hotel, known for the daily roam of the ducks. We watched the ducks walk through the lobby area inside the hotel. Graceland, the former mansion of Elvis Presley, is also a top attraction in Memphis. And we couldn’t pass through Memphis without stopping at Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken.

Miami, Florida

During an overnight stay to catch a flight back home, we dined at Blue Collar in Miami. We had their conch fritters for an appetizer and the big ragout entree (featured on DDD).

Okarche, Oklahoma

The oldest bar in the state of Oklahoma is located outside of Oklahoma City in the town of Okarche. In 1896 the bar was opened by Peter Eischen. It was then known as Eischen’s Saloon but today it’s Eischen’s Bar. The menu is small, but what more could you want other than their famous whole fried chicken?

Ozark, Missouri

Lambert’s Cafe is home of the fresh baked “throwed rolls.” And, you can buy a giant cinnamon roll “to go” for a sweet treat to enjoy later!

Paris, Texas

Visit the Red River Valley Veterans Memorial and the Texas sized Eiffel tower in Paris, Texas.

Springfield, Missouri

The Early Bird Breakfast Pub has a nice little side patio for breakfast or brunch on a beautiful day! We sat outside with our pups while dining here. They have a neat breakfast menu. Everything we had was delicious, especially the sweet potato nuggets!

More recently, we stopped in Hold Fast Brewing, which is located in Springfield’s former Fire Station #1. Hold Fast Brewing is also dog-friendly!
