What to See in Lawrenceburg
Situated in the rolling hills of the Kentucky Bluegrass is the city of Lawrenceburg. We took a scenic drive through this part of Kentucky one afternoon to visit 2 world-famous distilleries.
Four Roses
Our visit to Four Roses included a walking tour of the distillery and grounds. The tour began inside the Visitors Center where we were given headsets to wear. Then, we were guided outdoors where our guide provided a snapshot of the history of the distillery, dating back to 1888. There is a neat, romantic backstory to how Four Roses got it’s name.
Our guide also discussed the distillery’s unique Spanish mission-style architecture, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
We also learned about the distilling process as we witnessed it in action. Four Roses uses 2 unique mash bills and 5 yeast strains to creatively craft different bourbon recipes. And each recipe name or label is composed of four letters.
The Distillery Legacy Tour ended with a guided bourbon flight tasting experience inside a room in the new Visitor’s Center.
Wild Turkey
Wild Turkey sits on a prime location, just 275 feet above the Kentucky River. The name Wild Turkey came from an executive who shared his bourbon when he was on a trip hunting wild turkey.
Located on Wild Turkey Hill, the operation can’t be missed! We arrived at the new, high-end visitor’s center to get a glimpse into this historic place.
Lawrenceburg also has award winning wineries! The Anderson County History Museum is located downtown along with shops and restaurants. There are also hotels, inn’s and Bed & Breakfasts in the area.
Bardstown, Frankfort, and Louisville are other cities to explore in this part of Kentucky.
